Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Seahawks 42 Texans 10

Week 6 - Sunday 16th October 2005

I'm going to let John McClain of the Houston Chronicle open this piece.

"Shaun Alexander rushed for 141 yards and four touchdowns. Someone named Maurice Morris rushed for 104 yards — on eight carries, for crying out loud. He averaged 13 yards a carry, and he doesn't even start."

The night for me had started with ladies volleyball, as I desperately (and unsuccessfully) tried for a live TV internet feed of the game. By the end of the night I was left wondering if that ladies team might have put up a better show on running defense than the hapless Texans managed.

The 1:30am kick off understandably saw reduced numbers in the chat room but we had a blast as the familiar tones of Steve Raible and Warren Moon described the action in Seattle.

The early flag fest was astonishing as neither team seemed to know how to line up or when to start moving and yellow filled the air. It got so bad that Mike Holmgren took a time out to have a word with his defense about it. The crazy thing was that the Texans were committing more than us!

If you just follow the first 2 possessions of the game it'll save me time.

Texans have the ball, fiddle about with it a little bit, get it maybe to that pretty picture of a Seahawk in the middle of the pitch then punt it to us so we can have a go.

Seahawks have the ball, pass, run, run, pass, run run, pass, run, run, touchdown. End of the first quarter and the Seahawks lead 14-0 with Shaun Alexander trotting in with both of them.

In the second quarter Matt Hasselbeck passed Jim Zorn's record of consecutive passes without an interception (153) then mixed things up by throwing a 3 yard touchdown pass to Joe Jurevicius for 21-3. He further mixed things up by then throwing an interception the next time he had the ball in his hands and the run was ended at 159.

It mattered not as Shaun and Mo pounded up the field on the first possession of the 3rd quarter all the way to the 1. 'Alexander goes in standing up' was the way that Steve Raible put it, as Hutchinson and Jones cleared his path. 28-3.

Next the Texans departed from the script in fiendish fashion. You'll remember they are playing fiddle about a bit, punt. Well on a 4th and 3 near the pretty Seahawk they snapped it not to the punter but to a running back who took it 12 yards. Sneaky if you ask me and whilst we were off guard we let them take it all the way to the end zone for 28-10.

I doubt they'd have done so had they known that they'd make Mike Holmgren so angry he started rattling the bars on Leonard Weaver's cage..

In the 4th quarter now and they were making us all angry as the Texans sacked Hass for a loss of 14. The next play Shaun took it back all 23 yards for another touchdown and 35-10.

If Mr McClain of the Houston Chronicle hadn't heard of Mo Morris, there's a reasonable chance he hadn't heard of Leonard Weaver who joined the party after much prompting from the chat room.

After Mo broke a run of 49 yards, Leonard added 14 on a 3rd and 5 stiff arming Texans off their feet as he went. Mo finished it of from 11 and his first touchdown since 2003 and 42-10.

With not one but two and arguably three smoking barrels it was always going to be a long night for the Texans but 320 rushing yards long must have shocked even them.

Lock, stock and 459 total yards sealed as comprehensive a victory as you are likely to see.
