2006 NFL Draft

Well it’s that time of year again. Time to slap on the hair gel as millions do their best Mel Kiper Jr impressions. Yes it’s draft time and this year’s bunch are a little bit odd. The first dozen or so players look exceptional but look from about fifteen downwards to the middle of the second round and really the players become much of a muchness and anyone can jump up twenty or so places because a team takes a particular fancy to a player. So where do the Seahawks fit into all of this? Well the most pressing need is in the secondary especially cornerback which is lucky in a way because the pool this year is incredibly deep with the possibility of six corners going in the first round. Two that will certainly be gone by 31 are Jimmy Williams of Virginia Tech and Tye Hill of Clemson. Williams has all the tools you look for and the attitude to go with it, which the Hokies tend to specialise in. Hill is extremely quick with great cover skills. The only knock on him is that he’s a little undersized but he has a natural jumping ability.

There are a number of corners that could fall to Seattle at 31. Ashton Youboty is a junior out of THE Ohio State University with everything you need in a corner. Size, speed strength, he’s got them all. The only knock on him is that he’s a bit raw and lacks experience. Experience is something that Kelly Jennings certainly doesn’t lack after starting 40+ games at Miami. He does lack a bit of size though and needs to bulk up a bit. He is extremely quick though. Johnathan Joseph is yet another of the corners to come out early. He’s very similar to Youboty in that he’s got all the tools that a corner needs but is still a bit raw. The thing I like about Joseph is his competitiveness. He never quits and enjoys a tackle. This attitude I think gives him the edge over the other two.

The Hawks have consistently said that they would take the best player available at 31 but would lean towards the defense. The loss of Steve Hutchinson may change all that though and taking a guard is a definite possibility. If that was to happen then Davin Joseph of Oklahoma is probably the guy. This kid is a tremendous natural talent. Great strength and quick feet make him the best run blocker in the draft. He does have a tendency to switch off now and again but that was because he was far more talented than the players he was up against It’s not a sexy pick but it does fill a need and with the depth at corner this year you could easily pick a decent player in the second round. Eg Penn State’s Alan Zemaitis or Danieal Manning out of Abilene Christian.

It’s no secret that the Seahawks would love a monster pass rushing defensive end. Mario Williams is of course the one to have but Seattle would probably have to give up the next five years draft picks to move up to get him though. Mathias Kiwanuka has been mentioned as a possible pick but his reputation has taken a huge knock after his bitch slapping by D’Brickashaw Ferguson in the Senior Bowl. Think back to Walter Jones and Patrick Kearney and you get a rough idea of the dominance Ferguson had. I’m sure the Hawks will take a DE at some point but I can’t see it being Kiwi in the first.

So I think it could be one of the two Josephs in the first round with either Manning or perhaps Max Jean-Gilles in the second. But who knows? Now where’s my Brylcream?
