Seahawks News Round Up

A slightly late news round up

First of all a reminder of those draft picks from April, lest we forget their names altogether. We had no first round pick due to the compensation for Deion Branch but in the 2nd went for another CB in Josh Wilson from Maryland. He will look to take the nickel spot and has performed well by all accounts at mini camps.

Continuing the defensive theme we took DT Brandon Mebane (California) and DE Baraka Atkins (Miami) in the 3rd and 4th respectively. It seems only a matter of time until we hear Seahawks commentator Steve Raible describe a sack from Atkins as a "Cracker from Baraka".

Our second 4th round pick was the wonderfully named Mansfield Wrotto a Guard from Georgia Tech. With Floyd Womack picking up yet another injury, young Wrotto might be in the frame sooner than anticipated.

OLB Will Herring (Auburn) was picked in the 5th as the Seahawks headline writers salivated. In the 6th we had 2 picks and went for 2 project WR's with promise in Courtney Taylor (Auburn) and Jordan Kent Oregon). One of them might earn a roster spot with the other on the practice squad.

In the final round, and not quite Mr Irrelevant, was 232nd pick overall and Steve Hutchinson's long term replacement in Guard Steve Vallos out of Wake Forest.

The Seahawks management have been typically upbeat about the progress of the draft picks through mini camp so optimism remains high at this moment. Look for the rookies to sign their contracts in the weeks leading up to camp which opens on the 27th of July. (Stop Press: both Wrotto and Herring have signed 4 year deals today 4/7/2007.)

There is not expected to be any earth shattering news on any more signings for the Seahawks and heading into the season the Seahawks will carry $10 million in spare cap room. There are certainly no worries on that score and it leaves the door ajar for another Deion Branch style capture.

We've already mentioned the words Womack and injury in the same sentence but apart from that the Seahawks don't have any real concerns as training camp approaches. Matt Hasselbeck and C Chris Spencer are both rehabbing well from surgery and look to play a full part in pre season. DT Marcus Tubbs is also building up from his microfracture injury last season and looks to be fit in time for the season. What price Tubbs playing all season for the Hawks and how important would that be in our run defense?

In positional news the Seahawks had been looking for a way to get RT Ray Willis on the field and they may have found it by moving him to RG where has impressed during mini camps.

A reminder about the pre season schedule is also in order. The Seahawks will play road games against he Chargers on 12th August and against the Packers on the 18th. Both games have a 1:00am UK kick off time. If that's too late for you then forget then home games against the Vikings on the 25th and the Raiders on the 30th which kick off at 2:00am and 3:00am respectively.

However, the really desperate news for us Seahawks news junkies was the departure of Mike Sando from the Tacoma News Tribune for a new career with ESPN. His blog had become an indispensable daily source of news, stats and updates on the most minor of happenings in the Seahawk world and he will be sorely missed.

We will post an update in early August to look at further developments and how the first few days of camp have gone.
