Seahawks Review – August

With just one Preseason game remaining the Hawks have a 2-1 record after victories over New Orleans & Kansas City. Their only defeat coming against Dallas in a Monday Night game.

Only one new serious injury to report with Floyd “Pork Chop” Womack suffering a Triceps tear in the Kansas City game. Sean Locklear stepped in & as he has played every line position except Center there is no need for concern on that front.

As expected Marcus Tubbs & Chuck Darby have made quite an impact on the interior of the Defensive Line. This was just as well because the injuries to both Rashad Moore & Ced Woodard have yet to heal.

Despite participating in Training Camp Woodard’s shoulder had not properly healed & the team decided to release him. There is likely to be a claim made by the player’s agent for injury compensation. Nothing has been confirmed on this front at the time of writing. Another casualty was DE Antonio Cochran but not because of injury. His release was due to a lack of intensity & desire. Moore is still a Seahawk but no decision has yet been made as to whether he’ll be put on Injured Reserve.

The release of both Cochran & Woodard frees up some cap space that may go on acquiring Eagles DT Corey Simon. Simon was originally tagged as Philadelphia’s Franchise player but with plenty of depth on their Defensive line the Eagles removed the tag & made him an unrestricted Free Agent. The Seahawks are 1 0f 4 teams interested in Simon. Whilst the Coaching Staff seem happy with the Depth at DT the fan base seems to think you can never have enough depth. Especially as the starters both had to play injured in 2004 precisely because of that reason.

Alex Bannister is on target for the season opener in Jacksonville. He was practicing in a Red no contact jersey this week. Jerheme Urban & Jerome Pathon look set to contest the last WR roster spot.

The Hawks are still looking to upgrade their Kick Off & Punt Returns with the recent signing of ex Arizona RB Josh Scobey. Peter Warrick became available in the 30 August cuts. WR Warrick was on the Bengals books last season. He has a good character & is a team player. However, there are some concerns about his health.

Lofa Tatupu was expected to make a big impact in the Pre Season but still seems to be going through the learning curve having missed a several days of Camp with a Hamstring tweak. On this evidence it would seem logical to assume Koutovides will be the starter at MLB on opening day. Another Rookie LB who has impressed the coaching staff is Leroy Hill. Hill recorded a sack & forced a fumble in the New Orleans game. He picked up a niggling minor knee injury & has missed both games since. He is available for the final preseason game. It would seem sensible to conclude that both will contribute later in the regular season. That leaves the probable starters at Linebacker as DD Lewis, Koutovides & Jamie Sharper.

The team acquired Defensive End Alain Kashama from the Chicago Bears for an undisclosed Draft choice. Kashama is a largely untried pass rushing specialist who will probably be used on obvious passing downs in the Minnesota game.
