Peter Boulware – Seahawk Messiah?
By Matt Cheesman

Some Seahawk faithful would have you believe that the deal is as good as done. They believe the clincher will be the presence of brother Mike alongside him on the field. If only it was that simple.

Peter Boulware

No doubt his pedigree is impressive; a four time Pro Bowler with career stats of 67.5 sacks (Ravens franchise record) plus being voted Defensive Rookie of the year in 1997.  There is no question that Peter Boulware would be a valuable addition to the Hawks roster, but only at the right price. Chad Brown was overpriced at $4.2 Million so don’t expect Boulware Senior to get that kind of money, especially as he’s wrong side of 30 & he spent last season on Injured Reserve. Green Bay GM Ted Thompson was the first to point out his injury history isn’t restricted to just last season. He suffered a dislocated shoulder in 1999 but played with a Harness & still went onto record 10 sacks. Assuming that agreeing a deal won’t be a problem there are other obstacles to getting the Veteran Linebacker to sign on the dotted line. Not least that the funds won’t be readily available until June. There are seven other teams vying for his services & some of them have a very healthy cap situation. Unlike the Hawks who currently have just $200,000 to spare.

The anticipated release of Cornerback Bobby Taylor will provide the much needed cap room. But the Front Office will be unlikely to break the bank as they’ll need to put funds aside for signing their Draft Picks. Another potential obstacle could be that funds won’t be available until after June 1. However, time does appear to be on the Hawks side on this occasion.

With just one visit to Houston out of the eight teams expressing an interest this would seem to indicate that the Boulware camp is in no rush to sign for the first team to shove a contract under his nose. If he observes all the formalities of Contract negotiations his tour could take in excess of two weeks & into June before he makes a decision. That would be very good news for the Seahawks.

The acquisition of Boulware Senior will count for nothing unless the Hawks defense can get him on the field. It is highly unlikely he would be an all down player at Outside Linebacker. Remember, he is being hired for his specialist pass rushing skills & would probably only be on the field on obvious passing downs, most probably replacing Grant Wistrom. Boulware enjoyed his most productive spell when he switched to Defensive End for the last six games of the 2001 season. As a direct result of this he recorded his best single season sack total of 15 to lead the AFC.

If he can steer clear of injury then he’ll be fine. The irony is that the player being cut to make room for him was also a 30+ veteran Bobby Taylor. If Boulware does join the Hawks then we can only hope he lasts longer than the former Eagles Corner. It’s been a while since we’ve seen the Blades Brothers (Bennie & Brian) in Seahawks uniforms at the same time. Here’s hoping for the Boulware boys will be Brothers in Arms in 2005.
